Would your accounts department notice if a standing order from a regular donor was suddenly cancelled?

What would you do if they did spot it?

I once cancelled my long-term standing order to a favourite charity when my financial circumstances changed and they did absolutely nothing. It could easily have been a bank error.

People stop giving for many reasons, but the charity should always try to find out why. Has the donor been offended by something? Has the charity failed to live up to the donor’s expectations in some way?

A quick phone call to the donor could easily clarify the situation.  You could reassure them that you value their relationship even if they have had to make cut backs on their giving for a while. If there has been some misunderstanding, at least you would be aware and could try to rectify the situation.

One thing is certain, if you do nothing at all about it, the relationship with that donor is dead – probably for ever.
