Why might you need a fundraising strategy?
Clients will often request help to raise funds
for a particular project. At Giving the Best,
one of the first questions we would typically
ask is ‘Where does this project fit within your
strategic plan?’
Our experience shows that in order for a
fundraising campaign to have any chance of
success, you must be able to convince donors
that their money is going to help achieve
your stated purpose (mission). You must also
demonstrate how that will happen.
- your purpose or mission statement
explains what business you are in – why
you exist
- your vision statement sets out what
you hope to do in the next 5 to 10 years
- where you are going

- your strategic plan explains how you
intend to do that
- the fundraising plan is part of that
strategic process - how are you going to
pay for it all? But it must be thoroughly
rooted in your purpose and vision. Any
capital appeals (e.g. for a new building)
must demonstrate how this relates to your
purpose, and be included in the strategic
plan for accomplishing your vision
- your case for support answers the
question ‘Why should I give my money to
you?’
Applying to major donors or grant-making
trusts is similar to asking your bank
manager for a loan. You must have a viable
business plan which demonstrates that
your organisation is going to be a sound
investment.
Giving the Best can help you develop these
vital documents. |
